Born of a Spanish mother and Irish father, Nuala has music in her blood – and the blend of the Latin with Celtic accounts unmistakably for her warm-hearted yet hot-blooded and passionate songs.
Creating a seductively soulful blend of acoustic folk and samba-tinted jazz, with lyrics in English and Spanish, she’s already inspiring favourable comparisons with the likes of Suzanne Vega for the warmth of her style and with the late Kirsty McColl for her words’ incisive wit.
Percussive Bossa Nova rhythms accompany Latino-jazz chords and the odd flamenco guitar solo, which all contribute to her brilliantly executed ‘sunshine sound’. By turns bitter and sweet, hard-bitten yet playful, her approach to song-writing boasts an admirable, truly original and deeply enjoyable maturity that easily crosses genres and strongly suggests she has the potential to carve herself a niche among the current resurgence of female singer-songwriters - such as KT Tunstall and Nerina Pallot among many others.
